This year we managed to celebrate the 4th of July for three straight days. We started by attending "Red, White and Boom" in downtown Columbus on Friday evening. As usual, the crowd was huge, but we got there early (around 5:30) and the waiting seemed to go by very quickly. The fireworks were awesome, but afterward we had to walk several block to get to the car. I've noticed that after our D.C. vacation, the four of us are successful at walking what used to seem like fairly long distances. The kids are good about keeping up in such big crowds too. We were prepared to wait in traffic (when we went two years ago we were at a standstill for over an hour), but the traffic gods were smiling on us and we were home an hour after the fireworks show ended. Not bad for what is a 40 minute drive on a regular day. I think we just got lucky - the GPS suggested a route that was not on the beaten path, and we circled around to the freeway in near-record time.
Saturday evening we had a bonfire with the Smiths - the first of the summer - and it was embellished with a live fireworks show from Andy and their next door neighbor Jim. It was really quite a show and the kids got to play with sparklers too. And as usual, s'mores, hot dogs, and drinks make the evening a win-win for everyone.
Sunday night we went to see the Marysville fireworks with the Smiths again. All of our kids ran into friends there - mostly the Scheiderer clan, who seem to have someone each of our kids' ages between their three families. Another good show, although not a big as "Red, White and Boom."
It was a great weekend, but after three late nights with the kids, I was ready to get back to normal yesterday.
