I forgot to add this in my last post. We lost another fish yesterday. This time it was Charlie, Sam's fish that we got right before Thanksgiving. We could have froze him out - with the dip in temperatures while we were away this weekend and turning the heat down on top of it, the tank was a couple of degrees below the "safe" zone when we got back Sunday night. (We're not used to thinking about the fish's well-being while we are out of town.) Ben thinks there's no way a small change in temperature could have killed him, but our tank is uaully in the upper part of the "safe" zone so it really was cooler in there. But who knows.
Sam accepted the death with momentary disappointment, then wanted to know when we could get a new one (we told him after Christmas). The only survivor in the tank now is Katie, Maria's fish from Thanksgiving. Think we may try something other than guppies when we re-stock the tank next time - see if we have better luck.
